Richmond Fitted Wardrobes

Fitted wardrobes in Richmond: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. We visit to measure and talk through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use

Fitted wardrobes in Richmond

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room before the final coat. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

About our fitted wardrobes in Richmond

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where the space allows. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in Richmond, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Richmond, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

What affects the price in Richmond

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Practical tips

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Let us know about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Richmond

Does a conservation area in or near Richmond affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Richmond?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It’s planned so there’s room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What are your fitted wardrobes made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. The materials are named in your written quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Richmond homes and fitted wardrobes

In the streets around Richmond, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 54%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Richmond is in the Richmond Hill Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Around Richmond, about 54% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Richmond upon Thames as a whole, about 38%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted wardrobes.

The wider area includes historic houses like Pembroke Lodge, about 1 mile south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like The Wick and Wick Cottage, less than half a mile south of the centre of Richmond, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Too little room for clothes

Close to Terrace and Buccleuch Gardens? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
