What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Getting in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes in Honor Oak: what you get

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls, which helps keep mould away. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. People usually come to us about a room too narrow for hinged doors and wardrobes that are full to bursting; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Honor Oak were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first

Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.

Questions from Honor Oak

I live in a flat in Honor Oak. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Honor Oak?

Yes. Honor Oak is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes, as long as it is ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

It’s common, and it is allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Honor Oak homes and fitted wardrobes

About 54% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Honor Oak went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Honor Oak, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Augustine (Grade II), less than half a mile east, and Woodville Hall (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. A van working in Honor Oak will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Close to Peckham Rye? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For families living near St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope, with hanging where it’s tall and drawers or shelves where it’s low. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it’s useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
