Perry Vale Fitted Wardrobes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Perry Vale, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

Fitted wardrobes in Perry Vale

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and wasted space beside the chimney breast; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If your bedroom is in a period house, expect uneven walls and tall ceilings; in a newer flat, expect plasterboard and a lower ceiling. A home in Perry Vale might be either, or neither. Each is measured and fitted in its own way. Ceiling height sets how tall the furniture can go.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line the doors up again.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads.

Fitted wardrobes in Perry Vale: local notes

In the area around Perry Vale, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Perry Vale, Historic England’s list includes Fire Station (Grade II), under half a mile north, and Christ Church (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 21% of households in the area around Perry Vale live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.7 miles west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Mayow Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth raises the wardrobe off the floor and takes up any slope. It can line up with the skirting.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits wardrobes in a period room. The colour is agreed with you, and it’s easy to refresh in future.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Honest limits

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do you cover homes near Forest Hill station?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

How do I get started?

Just get in touch through our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote in writing.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through at the design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
