How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the measuring visit. Most enquiries start with condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and dusty space on top of the wardrobe, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Crofton Park, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.
Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
Where other trades come in
It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Building work to create a loft room
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Crofton Park
In the area around Crofton Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 57%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Crofton Park is within about a quarter of a mile of the Brockley Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Crofton Park, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Hilda, less than half a mile west of the centre of Crofton Park, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Crofton Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For a family home near Stillness Infant School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Crofton Park
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Crofton Park?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Crofton Park station?
Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. The slope is measured at the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Flats, leases and landlords
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
