Fitted wardrobes for homes in Nunhead
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are no space in front for doors to swing and empty alcoves in the bedroom, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
With a large share of homes around Nunhead built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Nunhead?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Nunhead?
Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and Nunhead is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns tricky space into storage.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
We plan the sections around the route into your flat, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first before we come to fit them.
Caring for painted furniture
People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, open and close the doors gently.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.
How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it’s useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Bedroom storage in Nunhead
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Nunhead were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Nunhead. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the streets around Nunhead, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Chapel of Nunhead Cemetery, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Nunhead station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What else we make in Nunhead
Do you need fitted wardrobes in Nunhead?
Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- Not enough hanging space
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
If your home is one of the older houses near Saint Antony with Saint Silas, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
Where other trades come in
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
