About our fitted wardrobes in Sanderstead

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an tricky corner into storage. If you are living with damp or musty clothes against an external wall and wardrobes that are full to bursting, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Sanderstead, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Sanderstead homes and fitted wardrobes

In the neighbourhood around Sanderstead, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Sanderstead, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade I), under half a mile east, and The White House (Grade II), under half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Croydon sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

Close to Littleheath Woods? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a family home near Gresham Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Addington Palace, about 2.3 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in Sanderstead

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can. A little ventilation in the room helps.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Sanderstead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Sanderstead?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Sanderstead included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.
