How we make fitted wardrobes for Blackheath

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. If your home has too little room for clothes and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall, fitted wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Around Blackheath, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the bedroom may be modest in size but regular in shape. Where there isn’t much space in front, a careful layout helps everything fit. Walls of that age can be harder to drill than plaster on brick, so the right fixings matter.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

How to prepare

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Blackheath

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Blackheath?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Blackheath?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a written quote once we have measured up.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Blackheath

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Blackheath were built before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 36%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 112 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Blackheath. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. All of London, Lewisham included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Blackheath fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

If you live near Manor House Gardens, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Near listed buildings like Numbers 1 to 14 (consecutive) the Paragon, less than half a mile east of the centre of Blackheath, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near All Saints' Church of England Primary School Blackheath, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Let us know which walls face outside

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us at the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.
