Eastfields Fitted Wardrobes

In Eastfields, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. Your fitted wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Eastfields

Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed

Close to Figge's Marsh? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Eastfields

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Eastfields, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

When is bespoke worth it?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

How it’s made

Hanging rails

Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach without a step. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Bedrooms in Eastfields: local notes

In the area around Eastfields, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Eastfields, Historic England’s list includes Eagle House (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Prospect House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 43% of households in the area around Eastfields live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

For a flat near Mitcham Eastfields station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For families living near St Mark's Church of England Academy, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Mitcham Eastfields station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Eastfields?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

How long will the fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
