Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How we make fitted wardrobes for Bushey Mead

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and wasted space beside the chimney breast.

Around Bushey Mead, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

When you need someone else

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Bushey Mead

Is parking a problem for fitting in Bushey Mead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

I live near Raynes Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Bedroom storage in Bushey Mead

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Bushey Mead, with about 33% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 10 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Bushey Mead. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Bushey Mead. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If you live near Cannon Hill Common, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Near listed buildings like Methodist Church, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Bushey Mead, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Raynes Park station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Tell us which walls face outside

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then. Do not let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly on an external wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
