Our fitted wardrobes across Merton
Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are not enough hanging space and empty alcoves in the bedroom.
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
How our quotes work
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Ask for a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Merton
Across Merton, including Wimbledon, Colliers Wood and Morden, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.
About 37% of the homes in Merton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Around a third of the homes in Merton (about 37%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 36% of households in Merton live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.
Homes across Merton range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a quote in writing, then making and fitting.
Wimbledon: Living in a block of flats near Wimbledon station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished, in the colour agreed with you. Give the paint time to cure fully.
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.
Is bespoke worth it?
Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Real projects you can actually look at
Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
What prompts fitted wardrobes
A move is a common trigger. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or will not go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
- No space in front for doors to swing
Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Merton
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
