Questions we’re often asked
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Cannon Hill?
Yes. Cannon Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cannon Hill?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We talk it through during the design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
About our fitted wardrobes in Cannon Hill
An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. If you are living with mismatched bedroom furniture and storage boxes stacked under the bed, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Cannon Hill, bedrooms normally have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitted wardrobes in Cannon Hill: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Cannon Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and before 1919 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Cannon Hill, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 39% of households in the streets around Cannon Hill live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.
Living in a block of flats near South Merton station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For families living near Hillcross Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Landmarks near Cannon Hill
We fit furniture in homes around The Edward Rayne pub, Merton College and Harris Academy Wimbledon and the streets around them. Cannon Hill’s nearest station is South Merton station, about 0.5 miles north-east of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Wimbledon Museum (1.6 miles north) and St. Anthony's Hospital (1.5 miles south). Not far away are Cherry Wood.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.
People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Structural changes to the room
- Decorating or plastering the room
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.
Hanging rails
We keep the top rail at a height you can reach without a step. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
From workshop to your room
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
How to prepare
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
