Fitted wardrobes in Wimbledon Chase: what you get
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and storage boxes stacked under the bed.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Wimbledon Chase date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Caring for painted furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Empty the area where we will be working
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.
Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us at the design visit if you need to store something heavy.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
Hanging rails
Rails are set at heights that suit your clothes: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.
Bedrooms in Wimbledon Chase: local notes
In the area around Wimbledon Chase, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Wimbledon Chase Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Wimbledon Chase. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Wimbledon Chase, let us know at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
Living in a block of flats near Wimbledon Chase station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Cannon Hill Common? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. For a family home near Wimbledon Chase Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Flats, leases and landlords
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
What happens on fitting day
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Advice
Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wimbledon Chase?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?
Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.
Do you cover Wimbledon Chase?
Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes Wimbledon Chase.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
What fitted wardrobes can’t fix
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
