Fitted wardrobes in Muswell Hill: what you get
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are clothes with nowhere proper to go and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Muswell Hill, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Questions we’re often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Muswell Hill?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Muswell Hill in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes, we work across Haringey, Muswell Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
We plan it with you at the measuring visit, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
How do I get started?
Just fill in our short enquiry form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Muswell Hill
In the area around Muswell Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 62%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 7 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Muswell Hill. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Haringey sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
If you live near Alexandra Park, fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Athlone House, about 1.6 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Odeon Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space.
Birch plywood
Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood helps keep them straight across wider sections.

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Fitting day, step by step
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
- A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
Before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
- Let us know which walls face outside
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.
Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.
