Fitted Wardrobes in Wood Green

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Wood Green starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom typically needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Too little room for clothes
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

Living in a block of flats near Alexandra Palace station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Fitted wardrobes in Wood Green

Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are damp or musty clothes against an external wall and wasted space beside the chimney breast, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Wood Green, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. A little ventilation in the room helps.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Wood Green

Homes built before 1919 make up about 62% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Wood Green, with about 13% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wood Green include Top Rank Club (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Wood Green Underground Station (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 23% of households in the streets around Wood Green, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.4 miles east. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Michael and All Angels, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
