Practical tips
Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then so the doors run smoothly. Do not let shoes or bags sit in the track.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. A little ventilation in the room helps.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Highgate
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wardrobes that are full to bursting and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.
With a large share of homes around Highgate built before 1919, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Getting a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.

Bedroom storage in Highgate
In the streets around Highgate, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Highgate. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. About 47% of households in the area around Highgate live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Near listed buildings like Cromwell House, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Highgate, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Whittington Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. The wider area includes historic houses such as Witanhurst, about 0.4 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. Our wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors, ready to assemble in the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Upper Holloway station?
Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Highgate?
Yes, we work across Haringey, Highgate included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We will look at the room with you at the measuring visit.
What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The width and height of the space
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Helping us understand the room
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
