Fitted wardrobes across Hillingdon: what to expect
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bedroom that never feels tidy and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom.
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit.

Also close by are St Lawrence (0.7 miles north-east), Bishop Ramsey School (less than half a mile north) and Warrender Primary School (less than half a mile west). For rail, the closest station is West Ruislip station, roughly 1.3 miles west of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Heath Robinson Museum (1.5 miles north-east) and Northwood and Pinner Cottage Hospital (1.9 miles north).
Fitted wardrobes for homes across Hillingdon
Homes across Hillingdon, Ruislip, Hayes and Yeading among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in Hillingdon, with about 25% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Around a third of the homes in Hillingdon (about 37%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. A quarter or more of the homes in Hillingdon (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.
Ruislip: Near listed buildings like Lady Bankes School, less than half a mile south of the centre of Ruislip, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Ickenham Hall, about 1.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
When you need someone else
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- The number of doors and drawers
- How square the room is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What to send when you get in touch
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- What the furniture needs to hold
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
What prompts fitted wardrobes
Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
Caring for painted furniture
These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Empty the area where we’ll be working
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hillingdon
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the measuring visit.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The fitting depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The wardrobes are made in our workshop first.
What if my bedroom floor is not level?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It’s planned so there is room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
