Shacklewell Fitted Wardrobes

Planning fitted wardrobes for a home in Shacklewell? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

Fitted wardrobes in Shacklewell

Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the measuring visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about space under the eaves going to waste and too little room for clothes.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around Shacklewell, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Shacklewell

Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture and keeps everything out of sight.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Not enough hanging space
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

For families living near The Petchey Academy, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Shacklewell

Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Shacklewell?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shacklewell?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It is planned so there’s room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns awkward space into storage.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
