Tips worth knowing
People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.
Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust any door that starts to catch.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hackney Marshes
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and no space in front for doors to swing; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Fitted furniture in a bedroom has to work with how you use the room. Whatever your home in Hackney Marshes is like, the first question at the measuring visit is what the room needs to do. Then the layout, doors and inside fittings follow. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted, in a colour agreed with you.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop, since there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time first. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. The finish is chosen to suit the space.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Hackney Marshes
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
Questions we’re often asked
Is Hackney Marshes in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London, and Hackney Marshes is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
I live in a flat in Hackney Marshes. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It’s planned so there is room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.
