Fitted wardrobes in Newington Green, Islington

In Newington Green, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. We design your fitted wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Newington Green, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting

If you live in a period home close to Newington Green Unitarian Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Newington Green?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Canonbury station?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It is planned so there’s room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Why bespoke in Newington Green?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before we arrive

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture, and keep sliding doors from crashing into the ends. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Newington Green

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Newington Green were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Newington Green is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 32% of households in the streets around Newington Green live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, less than half a mile east of the centre of Newington Green, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near Highbury Fields, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
