Fitted wardrobes for your home in West Hackney
Fitted bedroom furniture in West Hackney
Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the streets around West Hackney, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Hackney include Church of St Barnabas (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south, and The Coach and Horses Public House (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 25% of households in the streets around West Hackney, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Living in a block of flats near Rectory Road station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael and All Angels, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
West Hackney is about 2 miles south of Shoreditch, part of the London Borough of Hackney. West Hackney is part of the area we cover. West Hackney is one of the places in Hackney where we make fitted wardrobes, and the borough has 20 places on our list.

If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. About our fitted wardrobes in West Hackney
Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where that suits the room. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in West Hackney, the first step is a design visit to measure up and discuss the design. People usually come to us about several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. That layout is worth knowing around West Hackney, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Questions we’re often asked
My home in West Hackney is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you cover homes near Rectory Road station?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You will get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.
Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so tell us during the design visit if you need to store something heavy.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
If your children go to Benthal Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Choosing a carpenter
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

Starting with a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
