Fitted wardrobes in Dalston: local notes

In the area around Dalston, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 22 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Dalston. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Dalston, let us know during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Close to Haggerston Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Sutton House, about 0.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Dalston is in the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south of Shoreditch. We cover Dalston as part of our work across Hackney. Dalston is one of the places in Hackney where we make fitted wardrobes, and the borough has 20 places on our list.

Every address in E8, N1 and N16 is covered for fitted wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Streets in the area include Glebe Road, Forest Road and Boleyn Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted wardrobes. The A107 and A1207 runs close to Dalston, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. We also cover the places around Dalston: Kingsland (1 mile west), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile west), Hackney Central (1 mile east), London Fields (1 mile south-east) and Shacklewell (1 mile north). Across the rest of Hackney, our area takes in Stamford Hill (2 miles north), Upper Clapton (2 miles north), Manor House (2 miles north-west), Lea Bridge (2 miles north-east) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles north-east).

Around Dalston

Our area takes in the homes around The Petchey Academy, The Duke Of Richmond Public House and Kingsland Secondary School. There is a railway station in Dalston itself: Dalston Junction station. Other landmarks nearby include Clowns Gallery-Museum (close by, under half a mile west) and Hackney Walk (0.9 miles east).

Fitted wardrobes in Dalston: what you get

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where the space allows. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. For a bedroom in Dalston, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are storage boxes stacked under the bed and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom.

In a block, a bedroom wall may be shared with the neighbours or the corridor, and those walls can be solid or plasterboard. Around Dalston, where most households live in purpose-built flats, fixings are chosen with neighbours in mind as well as strength. Tall pieces are always fixed back.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop. Big standalone units don’t always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. The sections are assembled once inside.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured not just the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Dalston?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Dalston?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

It’s worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Dalston

Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces, and everything has a place behind it.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
