Fitted wardrobes in Clapton, Hackney
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Clapton starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Too little room for clothes

Fitted wardrobes in Clapton: what you get
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. If your home has standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Clapton are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Not enough hanging space
Close to Millfields Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
What to check before you book
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour, and touch-ups are simple.
Doors and drawer fronts
Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. You choose a colour that matches or contrasts with the room.

What else we make in Clapton
Clapton homes and fitted wardrobes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Clapton, with about 16% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Clapton is within about a quarter of a mile of the Clapton Pond Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Clapton is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Sutton House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St James the Great, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Clapton is about 2 miles south of Shoreditch, within the London Borough of Hackney. We can visit homes in Clapton on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Hackney, large and small.
Postcode districts we cover here for fitted wardrobes: E5, N16 and E8. We cover homes on streets like Muir Road, Downs Road and Tilia Road, whether you want fitted wardrobes or another piece made for the room. Nearby, we also make fitted wardrobes in Lea Bridge (1 mile north-east), West Hackney (1 mile west), Homerton (1 mile south-east), Lower Clapton (1 mile south-east) and Shacklewell (1 mile south-west). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places such as Shoreditch (2 miles south), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), Haggerston (2 miles south-west) and Manor House (2 miles north-west).
What’s near Clapton
In Clapton, that includes homes near Newcome's School, Baden-Powell School and The Amhurst Arms Public House, among other places. There is a railway station in Clapton itself: Clapton station. Nearby you’ll also find Clowns Gallery-Museum (1.2 miles south-west) and Homerton University Hospital (0.8 miles south-east). For a walk, there is Woodberry Wetlands.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Clapton
Does a conservation area in or near Clapton affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Clapton?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop before we come to fit them.
What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through during the design visit.
