Fitted wardrobes for homes in Manor House
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. People typically come to us about clothes with nowhere proper to go and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
With a large share of homes around Manor House built before 1919, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Manor House homes and fitted wardrobes
About 54% of the homes in the area around Manor House went up before 1919, and about 18% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Stoke Newington Resvrs, Filter Beds and New River Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Manor House. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. All of London, Hackney included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Manor House, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
Near listed buildings like Engine House of Metropolitan Water Board, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of Manor House, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Bruce Castle, about 2.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Manor House is part of the London Borough of Hackney, about 3 miles south of Shoreditch. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Manor House and across Hackney. In Hackney, Manor House is one of the places we cover.
In N4, N16 and N15, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street such as Vale Road, Eade Road and Swan Lane, or close by, we can visit to measure up for fitted wardrobes. The A503 run close to Manor House, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. If you are just outside Manor House, we also cover Harringay (1 mile north), St Ann's (1 mile north-east), Stoke Newington (1 mile south-east), Stamford Hill (1 mile east) and West Green (1 mile north). Across the rest of Hackney, our area takes in Shoreditch (3 miles south), Hoxton (3 miles south), Homerton (3 miles south-east), Hackney (3 miles south-east), De Beauvoir Town (2 miles south) and Hackney Central (3 miles south-east).

Our area takes in the homes around Beaconsfield pub, Church of St Andrew and Woodberry Down School and the streets around them. Manor House has its own railway station: Harringay Green Lanes station. Nearby you will also find City of London Maternity Hospital (1 mile west) and The Mall Wood Green (1.6 miles north). For a walk, there’s Woodberry Wetlands.
Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
For a flat near Harringay Green Lanes station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Fitting day, step by step
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.
- You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harringay Green Lanes station?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
My house in Manor House is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Manor House?
Simply use our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
