Fitted Wardrobes in Shirley Oaks
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Shirley Oaks starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Too little room for clothes
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Shirley Oaks
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 42% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Shirley Oaks, with about 18% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Shirley Oaks, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mildred (Grade II), about 0.6 miles west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Shirley Oaks joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If you live in a period home close to Shirley Methodist Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Shirley Oaks is about 3 miles north-west of Thornton Heath, in the London Borough of Croydon. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Shirley Oaks and across Croydon, as part of our work in every London borough. Shirley Oaks is one of the places in Croydon where we make fitted wardrobes.
Every address in CR0, SE25 and CR9 is within our area for fitted wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Streets in the area include Poppy Lane, Baring Road and Craven Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Shirley Oaks is near the A232, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. Fitted wardrobes in Shirley Oaks
The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and wasted space beside the chimney breast.
A bedroom in a house from between the wars normally has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around Shirley Oaks, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Fitting day, step by step
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
How to prepare
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Related advice
Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
Living in a block of flats near Elmers End station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- The width and height of the space
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
What to send when you contact us
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- How you want to use the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- The type of home and how the room is reached
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.
Questions we are often asked
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Shirley Oaks?
Yes. Shirley Oaks is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Shirley Oaks?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
How do I get a quote?
Just get in touch through our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
What fitted wardrobes cannot fix
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What goes into it
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
