Fitted wardrobes in South Chingford

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Advice

About our fitted wardrobes in South Chingford

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about no space in front for doors to swing and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars usually has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around South Chingford, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Bedrooms in South Chingford: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Chingford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and since 2000 (about 12%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Chingford include Church of St Edmund (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 9% of homes around South Chingford were built before 1919, well below the figure for Waltham Forest as a whole, about 45%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We check what the walls are made of at the measuring visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

If you live near Lloyd Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Bruce Castle, about 2.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Caring for painted furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:

  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel, especially on an external wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in South Chingford

Is South Chingford in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, South Chingford is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in South Chingford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.

Why bespoke in South Chingford?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That is a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why us?

What prompts fitted wardrobes in South Chingford

For some, it is about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture, and everything has a place behind it.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall

For a flat near Meridian Water station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
