Loft Storage in South Chingford

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make loft storage for homes in South Chingford, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes

Loft storage in South Chingford: what you get

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in South Chingford, it’s planned around your things. If you are living with unused space in a dormer and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room, eaves cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around South Chingford, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall and ceiling. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see is MDF.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

Do not pack things so tightly that air can’t move behind the knee wall. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps prevent damp behind the storage.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Loft storage in South Chingford: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around South Chingford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and since 2000 (about 12%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Chingford include Church of St Edmund (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 61% of homes in the streets around South Chingford date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use.

For a flat near Meridian Water station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Chingford Hall Primary Academy, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Close to Lloyd Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Common questions about loft storage

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Chingford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near Meridian Water station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

How is loft storage priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we will arrange a design visit.
