Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Wanstead
Walk-in wardrobes in Wanstead: what you get
Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. People typically come to us about a built-in dressing table and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Wanstead, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Tips worth knowing
These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Count your coats and long garments
- Make sure walls are dry before units go in
- Let air move through the space
- Think about where shoes and bags will go
Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly on a cooler external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units to help air move.
Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, so we allow for ventilation.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Wanstead
About 33% of the homes in the area around Wanstead went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 28% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Wanstead, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Christ Church (Grade II*), less than half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Redbridge included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Wanstead. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to Wanstead United Reformed Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your children go to Wanstead Church School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
Wanstead is in the London Borough of Redbridge, about 2 miles north of Woodford. Whether your home in Wanstead is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our work takes in places right across Redbridge, large and small.

Wanstead sits close to the A1008, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

Advice
FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Wanstead
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you cover homes near Leytonstone High Road station?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?
Often, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers, while leaving space to stand and turn. We will measure and plan it during the design visit.
How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we quote once we have measured. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Boards, parts and paint
Doors and drawer fronts
A dressing table with drawers can be built in if the room allows.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits a dressing room that should look crisp, and it’s done before fitting.
What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The internal fittings
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Getting in touch
These details help when you get in touch:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
