About our fitted wardrobes in Ilford

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. For a bedroom in Ilford, the first step is a design visit to measure up and go through the design. People normally come to us about clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and a room too narrow for hinged doors, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around Ilford are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • No space in front for doors to swing

If your home is one of the older houses near St Alban's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions from Ilford

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Ilford?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Ilford is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

My house in Ilford is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hand-painted finish

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth raises the wardrobe off the floor and takes up any slope. It can line up with the skirting.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly for a smooth finish. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
