Fitted wardrobes in Redbridge: how it works
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a room too narrow for hinged doors and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall.
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
How our quotes work
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Why work with us

How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.
Around Woodford
Around Woodford, we cover homes near Churchfields Junior School, St Barnabas' Church and Woodford Green Preparatory School, among other places. You will also find Former White Hart Public House (0.7 miles south-west), The Highams Park (1.1 miles north-west) and Woodbridge High School (close by, under half a mile south-east). The nearest railway station is Highams Park station, roughly 1.3 miles west. A little further out are Wanstead Hospital (1.4 miles south). Open spaces near Woodford include Highams Park Lake.
Bedroom storage across Redbridge
Many older bedrooms across Redbridge keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
The biggest shares of homes in Redbridge were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 34% of homes in Redbridge date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 32% of households in Redbridge live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. London terraces typically have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.
Redbridge is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.
Woodford: Valentines Mansion, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Hurst House, less than half a mile west of the centre of Woodford, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
What affects the price in Redbridge
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How square the room is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- How you want to use the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode

What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits wardrobes in a period room. The colour is agreed with you.
What we do not do
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
Is bespoke worth it?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
Questions we are often asked
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Where is the furniture made?
Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Do you work outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It is planned so there is room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
