Fitted Wardrobes in South Bank

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in South Bank, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

About our fitted wardrobes in South Bank

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and a bedroom that never feels tidy; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Bedrooms in flats often share a wall with the next flat or the communal corridor, and those walls can be solid or plasterboard. With purpose-built flats home to most households around South Bank, fixings are chosen with neighbours in mind as well as strength. Tall pieces are fixed back securely.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in South Bank

Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do

If you live in a flat close to London Waterloo station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What to check before you book

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in South Bank

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in South Bank?

Yes. South Bank is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

What we do not do

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • List the things that won’t hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.
