Built-in living-room furniture in Wood Green

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Wood Green were built before 1919 (about 62%) and since 2000 (about 13%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Trinity Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Wood Green. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Haringey has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 1.4 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a flat near Alexandra Palace station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Woodside Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Wood Green is about 2 miles east of Tottenham, within the London Borough of Haringey. Whether your home in Wood Green is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. In Haringey, Wood Green is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 23 places on our list.

TV and media units in Wood Green: what you get

The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you’re likely to upgrade, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are games, controllers and remotes everywhere and equipment with nowhere proper to go.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Wood Green went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the measuring visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The width and height of the space
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Is bespoke worth it?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. It’s also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Birch plywood

For carcasses and drawer boxes, birch plywood is hard-wearing that stand up to daily use. The edge can be painted or left as a detail.

FAQs: TV and media units in Wood Green

Does a conservation area in or near Wood Green affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Wood Green?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Is there room for a soundbar?

We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closed doors muffle sound.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. Each box should have its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
