Fitted Home Offices in Barnsbury
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Barnsbury, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Glare from a window on the screen
- A laptop that moves from room to room
- A corner too odd for a standard desk

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Fitted home offices in Barnsbury: what you get
The desk is the heart of a home office. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelving and cupboards can then be built around it. The design visit in Barnsbury is where these choices are made. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a guest room that’s needed for work and no way to put work away.
Most households around Barnsbury live in purpose-built flats, so the home office often has to share a room. A built-in desk in an alcove, a hallway recess or the end of a bedroom keeps work contained. Each piece is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?
A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. A single design gives the room clean, consistent lines. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Barnsbury affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Barnsbury?
Yes. Barnsbury is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
How is a home office priced?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A simple desk with shelves involves less work than a full wall of cupboards and drawers. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
- A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How we price fitted home offices
What you pay depends on:
- How square the room is
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Parking near your home
- How big the furniture is
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
What we need to know
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- Examples of the look you are after
- Your postcode and the borough
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see is MDF.
Shelves
Office shelving often carries heavy loads. How far a shelf spans and what it holds both count. Each shelf is made to stay straight under what you plan to store.
Barnsbury homes and fitted home offices
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Barnsbury were built before 1919 (about 39%) and since 2000 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Barnsbury is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. In Barnsbury, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
If your children go to Robert Blair School or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 2.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Near listed buildings like The Clock Tower, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Barnsbury, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Barnsbury is about 1 mile north-east of Highbury, part of the London Borough of Islington. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Barnsbury is part of that. Our work takes in places right across Islington.
