Fitted home offices in Bishopsgate: what you get

Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early at the measuring visit in Bishopsgate. If you’re living with a desk in the wrong light and no way to put work away, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Stud walls in newer homes can take shelves above a desk, as long as the fixings suit them. Since many of the homes around Bishopsgate date from 2000 onwards, that’s something we check during the design visit. Heavier storage stands on the floor.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitted home offices for homes in Bishopsgate

In the streets around Bishopsgate, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 41%) and before 1919 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 443 entries within half a mile of the centre of Bishopsgate. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time, particularly for larger pieces.

For families living near The London School of Barbering, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. Close to Finsbury Circus? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Bishopsgate is about 1 mile west of City of London, in the City of London. From period terraces to newer flats in Bishopsgate, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our work takes in places right across the City of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Bishopsgate: Aldgate (1 mile south-east), Spitalfields (1 mile east), City of London (1 mile west), Tower Hill (1 mile south) and Whitechapel (1 mile east).

Is it time for fitted home offices?

Paperwork and files often have nowhere to go. Built-in drawers, cupboards and shelving give everything a place. The desk stays clear for work.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • A screen that is hard to read by the window
  • A guest room that is needed for work
  • Working at the kitchen table

For an older house near Church of St Ethelburga, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Filing drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it is useful to let us know at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. First you tell us about the room and what your work needs, including the equipment you use.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. Your office furniture is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Starting with a design visit

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

For a quote for fitted home offices in Bishopsgate, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, plus any rough sizes. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Bishopsgate affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Liverpool Street station?

Yes, homes across the City of London and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Is it possible to have a desk under the eaves?

Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. We plan around the headroom, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
