  • A laptop that moves from room to room

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Check whether you will need new sockets
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Notice where daylight falls at different times
  • Consider your chair when planning the desk

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the furniture clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the desk picks up marks first.

Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Tight cables can mark edges over time. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.

About our fitted home offices in Aldgate

Everything in a home office starts with the desk. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with storage below where it helps. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. We’ll go through the details at the design visit in Aldgate. If you’re living with a desk buried under papers and a screen that’s hard to read by the window, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Stud walls in newer homes can take shelves above a desk, as long as the fixings suit them. With many homes around Aldgate built since 2000, that’s something we check at the measuring visit. Heavier storage stands on the floor.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The internal fittings

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts when you contact us with a few details about the space.
  2. We come to measure and work out where the desk, shelves and cable routes should go. New sockets are for your electrician, so it is useful to think about them early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the office we’ve discussed.
  4. The desk, shelving and cupboards are made in our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work.

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Questions from Aldgate

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Aldgate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit. The whole City of London is also inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ covers every London borough.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Aldgate?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. The conversion itself isn’t our work.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

Home working in Aldgate: local notes

In the streets around Aldgate, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 48%) and before 1919 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Lloyd's Avenue Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Aldgate. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Purpose-built flats are home to about 79% of households in the area around Aldgate, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Close to Finsbury Circus? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. For a family home near The Aldgate School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. Mansion House, about 0.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
