Fitted home offices for homes in Spitalfields
A good home office has a place for everything. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the work surface stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you’re done. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Spitalfields. People typically come to us about work things on show in the evening and a tangle of chargers and leads, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Many homes around Spitalfields have been built since 2000, and newer homes often have compact second bedrooms that end up as offices. Home offices can be planned to share the room with a guest bed. Stud walls need the right fixings for loaded shelves.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Do you need fitted home offices in Spitalfields?
Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. The kitchen table works for a while, then it does not. A built-in desk and storage make working at home far easier.
Fitted home offices can help with:
- A room with two jobs to do
- No way to put work away
- A screen that is hard to read by the window
- Shelves that sag under books and files
For a family home near Makers Academy, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.
What to check before you book
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
Fitted home offices in Spitalfields: local notes
About 45% of the homes in the streets around Spitalfields went up since 2000, and about 19% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Spitalfields, 36 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If you live near Finsbury Circus, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. Near listed buildings like Church of St Botolph, under half a mile south of the centre of Spitalfields, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Spitalfields
My home in Spitalfields is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Home offices are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Spitalfields?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit sockets in the desk?
Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It is useful to agree the positions at the design visit.
How long will the home office fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
What affects the price in Spitalfields
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How big the furniture is
- Spray painting or hand painting
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What the furniture needs to hold
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Where other trades come in
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Converting a loft to make room for an office
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Setting up computers, screens or networks
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

From workshop to your room
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it is useful to let us know during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Notice where daylight falls at different times
- Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
- Think about what will sit on the shelves
- Choose a calm colour for a working room
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. Should you have a question about the office, get in touch through our contact form and we will help.
Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Tight cables can mark edges over time. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.
