In Whitechapel, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. We design your home office at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.
- Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
- An tricky space with no furniture that fits
- Glare from a window on the screen

An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in Whitechapel or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with shelving that bows under the load and no way to put work away; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Big windows in newer homes bring plenty of light, and sometimes glare on a screen, so the desk position is worth thinking about. Around Whitechapel, many homes were built since 2000. A desk side-on to the window often works best.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Questions from Whitechapel
Is parking a problem for fitting in Whitechapel?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Does a conservation area in or near Whitechapel affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you work outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do you cover Whitechapel?
Yes. We work in Whitechapel and across Tower Hamlets.
Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?
A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves tricky gaps, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

When you need someone else
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Setting up computers, screens or networks
- Converting a loft to make room for an office
- Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

From workshop to your room
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Home offices are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- You receive a quote in writing for the office.
- The office furniture is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
- The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.
Preparing the room
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.

The problems fitted home offices solve
Some people want to separate work from home life. A desk with doors, or an office in a spare room, lets you close the door on work. It helps the home feel restful after hours.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- Glare from a window on the screen
- Files and folders piling up
- A tangle of chargers and leads
- Working at the kitchen table
Near listed buildings like Church of St Botolph, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Whitechapel, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Fitted home offices for homes in Whitechapel
Homes built since 2000 make up about 39% of the housing in the streets around Whitechapel, with about 19% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Whitechapel, 36 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 80% of households in the area around Whitechapel live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a flat close to Whitechapel station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to St Mary Matfelon, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
