  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • Wires with no tidy route

Fitted home offices in Bow

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit.

How we make fitted home offices for Bow

We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Bow. If you are living with paperwork and files with nowhere to go and a laptop that moves from room to room, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Shelving over a desk on a plasterboard wall needs fixings into the studs or made for the board. With many homes around Bow built since 2000, we find the studs and check the wall before designing. Tall cupboards stand on the floor and are tied back.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What to send when you get in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a home office. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your office furniture is built in our workshop, sized for the room.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work, with the cable routes left open.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Starting with a design visit

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Built-in desks and shelving in Bow

Homes built since 2000 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Bow, with about 20% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. There are 95 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bow. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and home offices can be designed to work around them. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Bow (about 44%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have a compact second bedroom that doubles as an office, so a desk that closes away helps.

Living in a block of flats near Hackney Wick station? Then home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Grove Hall Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Phoenix School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What it is made from

Doors and drawer fronts

Cupboard doors hide the clutter of working life. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. At the end of the day, work can be closed away.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers can form a pedestal under the desk. The middle stays open for your knees and chair. We plan it at the design visit.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bow?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Bow affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?

In many rooms, yes. We plan the office so there is still space for guests, or with doors that close over the desk. If space is tight, a wall bed can be built in alongside.

Can you build a home office in an alcove?

Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. We’ll check the size during the design visit.

Will you travel outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
