Fitted home offices for your home in Shadwell

About our fitted home offices in Shadwell

Everything in a home office starts with the desk. It’s made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with storage below where it helps. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. The design visit in Shadwell is where these choices are made. If your home has a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and working at the kitchen table, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a flat, a desk built into a wall of bedroom storage uses space well, with shelves above and drawers below. Since most households around Shadwell live in purpose-built flats, one run of furniture doing two jobs can make sense. We plan where cables run and leave new wiring to your electrician.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Where other trades come in

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Connecting printers and screens

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What prompts fitted home offices in Shadwell

Paperwork and files often have nowhere to go. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. The desk stays clear for work.

Fitted home offices can help with:

  • Files and folders piling up
  • A screen that’s hard to read by the window
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk

For an older house near St Paul's Church, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Shadwell?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Shadwell is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

I live in a flat in Shadwell. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Home offices are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. The desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand comfortably, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. We don’t carry out loft conversions.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Shadwell homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Shadwell were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 35%) and since 2000 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Shadwell, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Shadwell, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

For a family home near Peter Hills with St Mary's and St Paul's CofE Primary School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. Mansion House, about 1.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Shadwell is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 1 mile north-west of Whitechapel. Shadwell is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We list Shadwell among 31 places we cover in Tower Hamlets.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the desk, shelving and storage.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The desk, shelving and cupboards are made at our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work, with cable routes left clear.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF cuts cleanly, which suits panelled doors and the angled parts of a desk under a slope. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.
