Fitted home offices in Hackney Wick
A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, shaped by the way you work. For a home in Hackney Wick, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. Most enquiries start with shelving that bows under the load and a desk in the wrong light, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
A large number of homes around Hackney Wick date from 2000 onwards, and in newer homes, the second bedroom is often the office as well as the guest room. A desk with shelves and closed storage can share the room with a wall bed or a sofa bed. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so shelves are fixed into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Questions from Hackney Wick
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Hackney Wick?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Hackney Wick in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes, Hackney Wick is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
Which materials go into your home offices?
The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can a home office double as a guest room?
That depends on the space you have. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. At the design visit, we’ll suggest what works.
What happens on fitting day
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

Starting with a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
How it is made
Birch plywood
Shelves full of books and files carry real weight. We use birch plywood for shelves that carry a load. Where the span is long, we add thickness or support.
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panelled fronts can suit a period room. The gaps are kept even all along.
The problems fitted home offices solve
A spare room that has to do two jobs is another reason. Fitted furniture can make room for both. It puts the room to work most of the time.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- A desk in the wrong light
- Files and folders piling up
- Working at the kitchen table
- An tricky space with no furniture that fits
If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary of Eton, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary of Eton, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Hackney Wick, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
