About fitted home offices in Tower Hamlets
We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Tower Hamlets. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelving that bows under the load and wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day.
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
- You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office.
- At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
- We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.
How our quotes work
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

About 45% of the homes in Tower Hamlets went up since 2000, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. About 45% of homes in Tower Hamlets were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In homes built since 2000, the spare room is often small and has to do two jobs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 81% of households in Tower Hamlets, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so access to homes in Tower Hamlets is planned in advance.
Whitechapel: If your children go to Canon Barnett Primary School or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. If you live in a flat close to Whitechapel station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
How we price fitted home offices
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The width and height of the space
- Spray painting or hand painting
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.
What we need to know
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Where you live, with the postcode
For a quote for fitted home offices in Tower Hamlets, send us a few details through our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.
When you need someone else
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
- Installing IT equipment or broadband
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
The problems fitted home offices solve
Paperwork and files often have nowhere to go. Built-in drawers, cupboards and shelving give everything a place. It keeps the work surface clear.
People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
- Wires with no tidy route
- An tricky space with no furniture that fits
- Shelves that sag under books and files
Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Estimate the shelf space you will need
- Think about the space you need to push back
- List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. That keeps shelves straight over the years. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.
Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Tight cables can mark edges over time. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.
FAQs: fitted home offices in Tower Hamlets
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Where is the furniture made?
It is built in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?
Often, yes. The desk, shelving and storage can be designed to leave room for a bed, or with doors that hide the desk away. If space is tight, a wall bed can be built in alongside.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How is a home office priced?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
The furniture is built in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
