About our fitted home offices in Arnos Grove

Everything in a home office starts with the desk. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. The design visit in Arnos Grove is where these choices are made. If you’re living with no proper place to work from home and files and folders piling up, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have a bay window in the front room, and the alcoves beside the chimney breast can take books and files. Around Arnos Grove, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, a room like that can work as a study and still feel like part of the house. Everything is scribed to the room’s own walls.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the space.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and go through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Before and after fitting day

People planning fitted home offices often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Look at the window and where the light falls
  • Think about where the sockets are now

Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, message us from the contact page and tell us.

Arnos Grove homes and fitted home offices

Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around Arnos Grove, with about 28% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Arnos Grove. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Arnos Grove is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Near listed buildings like Arnos Grove Underground Station, under half a mile west of the centre of Arnos Grove, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For families living near Bowes Primary School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Arnos Grove

My home in Arnos Grove is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Which materials go into your home offices?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

That comes down to the size of the alcove. Plenty of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We will tell you honestly when we visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Why bespoke in Arnos Grove?

A standalone desk can go with you when you move. A fitted office stays with the house, and it uses the space in a way a standalone desk cannot. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. Leave knee room in the middle. The design visit settles the layout.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
