How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It’s done in our workshop before fitting. You choose the colour.

Birch plywood

Shelves full of books and files carry real weight. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and stiff. Where the span is long, we add thickness or support.

How we make fitted home offices for Bush Hill

Light matters in a home office. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We’ll suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. We look at it early at the design visit in Bush Hill. If your home has flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight and an alcove or landing that could take a desk, that’s what home offices are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, and storage can run along the walls either side. Much of the housing around Bush Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it, with a grille if there is a radiator below.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Working from home in Bush Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bush Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and before 1919 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Part of Bush Hill is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 39% of homes in the streets around Bush Hill date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk.

If you live in a flat close to Grange Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Forty Hall, about 2.1 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Bush Hill is about 2 miles south-east of Edmonton, in the London Borough of Enfield. Bush Hill is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Enfield.

Every address in N21, EN1 and EN2 is within our area for fitted home offices. If your home is on a street such as Park Avenue, Ridge Avenue and Private Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for fitted home offices. If you’re just outside Bush Hill, we also cover Bush Hill Park (1 mile east), Enfield (1 mile north), Winchmore Hill (1 mile south-west), Enfield Chase (1 mile north-west) and Gordon Hill (2 miles north). Elsewhere in Enfield, we also cover Palmers Green (2 miles south-west), New Southgate (3 miles south-west), Upper Edmonton (2 miles south-east), Oakthorpe Park (2 miles south-west), Arnos Grove (3 miles south-west) and Ponders End (2 miles east).

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Paperwork and files often have nowhere to go. Built-in drawers, cupboards and shelving give everything a place. The desk stays clear for work.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • No way to put work away
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • Files and folders piling up

For a family home near Grange Park Preparatory School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What affects the price in Bush Hill

Several things affect the price:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Bush Hill

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Bush Hill?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Bush Hill?

Yes, Bush Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, in a loft that is already converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. We do not carry out loft conversions.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What does a built-in desk cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.
