Bespoke Kitchens in Ilford

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Ilford starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • A central island in a larger kitchen

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Ilford

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. We plan each space around the appliances you’ve chosen, from the oven housing to the dishwasher. Your quote sets out the materials and finish. If you’re living with open shelves with cupboards below and room for everything in the kitchen, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a house built before 1919, a wall that looks solid may be lath and plaster. Since a large share of homes around Ilford are that old, we check each wall before wall cabinets are planned. If a wall can’t take wall cabinets, tall larders or a dresser standing on the floor can do the job.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Ilford

Is parking a problem for fitting in Ilford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Ilford?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Ilford?

Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. Larders, tall cupboards and deep drawers can hold much more without crowding the room.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Tall larder storage
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A dresser that suits a period house

For a family home near Winston Way Academy, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Why bespoke in Ilford?

There is a place for both. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. Where the room is awkward, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is typically worth considering. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Ilford

About 58% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ilford went up before 1919, and about 20% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Ilford include Chapel (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west, and Baptist Church and Institute (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 36% of households in the area around Ilford live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. Kitchens in London terraces are often narrow, sometimes in a back addition, which suits cabinets made to the exact width.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 0.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If your home is one of the older houses near St Alban's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To get a quote for bespoke kitchens in Ilford, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. We will arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
