Window seats designed for your room
Flats, leases and landlords
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Window seats in Norbury
Some window seats are built in with shelves or cupboards around them. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the lines and the finish match. It’s worth talking through during the design visit in Norbury. If your home has wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room, that’s what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Norbury, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Is bespoke worth it?
With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it sits with the skirting, the shutters or the walls. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It is used for the fronts, side panels and radiator grilles. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot where windows can gather condensation.
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there is a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It’s finished like the rest of the seat. The rest of the front can be drawers, doors or plain panels.

Many houses of that era have bay windows, natural places for a window seat.

For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch and tell us about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
- We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
- Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
- In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
- The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.
Preparing the room
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice
Questions from Norbury
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Norbury station?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Norbury?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do pictures help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How is a window seat priced?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
What is a window seat made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
