Old Town Loft Storage
Loft storage for your home in Old Town: eaves cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in converted lofts. We visit to measure and go through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.
- Unused space in a dormer
- Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

Loft storage in Old Town
A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it’s low. It uses the full height of the room. The design visit in Old Town is where we work it out. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a dormer that isn’t being used and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room.
In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around Old Town, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Storage in Old Town homes: local notes
About 42% of the homes in the streets around Old Town went up since 2000, and about 31% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Old Town, Historic England’s list includes Parish Church of St John the Baptist (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and Old Palace Croydon: Chapel (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 42% of homes in the area around Old Town were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In a newer house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes can be used.
Living in a block of flats near West Croydon station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Duppas Hill, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 3 miles east. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Your questions about loft storage in Old Town
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near West Croydon station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the design visit.
Which materials go into your loft storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Do pictures help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF cuts cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a sloping ceiling. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see is MDF.
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
How fitting works for loft storage
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
- At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The storage is made in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

What affects the price in Old Town
The price for your room depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- How you want to use the space
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
Practical tips
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
- Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Note the things that need a home in the loft
Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.
Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. A little ventilation helps. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.
