Built-in desks and shelving in Queensbury
About 80% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Queensbury went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 8% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Queensbury is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 80% of homes in the area around Queensbury date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk, built around the bulkhead.
Headstone Manor, about 2.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Close to Roe Green Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. For a family home near Glebe Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

About our fitted home offices in Queensbury
An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. The desk and shelves are scribed to the alcove, as period walls are seldom flat. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in Queensbury or anywhere else. If your home has a tangle of chargers and leads and a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room, that’s what home offices are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Queensbury, if the loft has been converted, the space under the eaves can take a desk and storage. We build in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, an alcove beside a chimney breast or a bay can take a desk.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What fitted home offices cannot fix
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
- Building a loft conversion, which is not our work
- Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.
Materials and parts
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Filing drawers
- Built-in desks
- Cable routes
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
How it’s made
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where the finish is most on show.
Doors and drawer fronts
Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panelled fronts can suit a period room. The gaps are kept even all along.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
From workshop to your room
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it is in.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
- We send a written quote.
- The desk and shelving are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Common questions about fitted home offices
Does a conservation area in or near Queensbury affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you cover homes near Kenton station?
Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you add power points to the desk?
That is work for your electrician. The furniture is designed to suit, with routes for chargers and screens. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?
Yes, where the loft has already been converted. The desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand comfortably, and the low space under the slope can hold storage. We don’t carry out loft conversions.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Pricing fitted home offices in Queensbury
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How big the furniture is
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
