Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves.

How we make TV and media units for Queensbury

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we plan open spaces for them. People normally come to us about empty alcoves beside the TV and a screen at the wrong height; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Queensbury, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives TV and media units a whole wall to work with. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Configuring the TV and sound system

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and go through the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Because it’s sprayed before fitting, the unit comes painted. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it is good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.

Queensbury homes and TV and media units

About 80% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Queensbury went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 8% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Queensbury is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Queensbury joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live in a flat close to Kenton station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Headstone Manor, about 2.7 miles west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For an older house near All Saints Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Queensbury is about 3 miles south-west of Harrow, part of the London Borough of Harrow. From period terraces to newer flats in Queensbury, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across Harrow.

In HA3, NW9 and HA7, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like Glebe Lane, Kenton Road and Turner Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Queensbury include the A4006 and A4140, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you’re just outside Queensbury, we also cover Kingsbury (1 mile south-east), Preston (1 mile south), Colindale (2 miles east), West Hendon (2 miles east) and The Hyde (2 miles east). Elsewhere in Harrow, we also cover Harrow (3 miles south-west), Stanmore (2 miles north), Hatch End (4 miles west), Harrow Weald (2 miles west), Wealdstone (2 miles west) and Greenhill (2 miles west).

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Queensbury?

Yes, we work across Harrow, Queensbury included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Queensbury affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
