Shirley Oaks Fitted Home Offices

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted home offices for homes in Shirley Oaks, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A screen that’s hard to read by the window
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room

About our fitted home offices in Shirley Oaks

Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in Shirley Oaks. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a room with two jobs to do and flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Shirley Oaks, the spare bedroom or dining room often doubles as the office. A built-in desk with doors that close over it lets the room go back to its other job at the end of the day. Cable routes and the position of sockets are planned into the design.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the home office designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shirley Oaks?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you cover homes near Elmers End station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Can a home office double as a guest room?

In many rooms, yes. We plan the office so there’s still space for guests, or with doors that hide the desk away. A fold-down wall bed can also be built into the design.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Built-in desks and shelving in Shirley Oaks

About 42% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Shirley Oaks went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Shirley Oaks include Church of St Mildred (Grade II), about 0.6 miles west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. All of London, Croydon included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Shirley Oaks. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Shirley Methodist Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Close to Ashburton Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. A fitted desk can have routes built in for chargers, screens and printers. That keeps the desk and the floor tidy. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.

Why choose us

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the furniture clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the desk picks up marks first.

A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Pushing it in gently helps. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
