Loft Storage in Shirley Oaks

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Shirley Oaks starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving

Need loft storage in Shirley Oaks?

What we don’t do

Not everything around loft storage is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists
  • Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work
  • Electrical work in the loft

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Eaves doors and drawers

About our loft storage in Shirley Oaks

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. For a home in Shirley Oaks, it’s planned around your things. If your home has boxes piled on loft boards and a loft room with too many jobs, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Shirley Oaks, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

How we price loft storage

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Why bespoke in Shirley Oaks?

For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. We will give you an honest view at the design visit. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Elmers End station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shirley Oaks?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not if it is planned with care. The storage is planned around the insulation and ventilation behind the knee wall. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft.

Can you get furniture up narrow loft stairs?

Measuring the route is part of the design visit. Each section is made to fit the narrowest point, and then assembled in the loft.
