Home working in Shirley: local notes

It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office.
For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. If your home is one of the older houses near St George The Martyr Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If you live near Ashburton Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

How we make fitted home offices for Shirley
A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, planned around how you work. For a home in Shirley, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. People usually come to us about a laptop that moves from room to room and cables trailing across the desk and floor; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Much of the housing around Shirley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it, with a grille if there’s a radiator below.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF cuts cleanly, which suits panelled doors and the angled parts of a desk under a slope. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It makes up most of the visible parts.
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?
Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. A fitted office stays with the house, and it uses the space in a way a standalone desk can’t. Which suits you depends on your plans. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, use our contact form.

What happens on fitting day
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- It starts when you contact us with some details about the space, including the equipment you use.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the desk, shelving and storage. New sockets are for your electrician, so it helps to think about them early.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The desk, shelving and cupboards are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work.
Before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Starting with a design visit
To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a written quote follows.
Related advice
Looking after your furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Think about glare on your screen
- Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
- Estimate the shelf space you will need
- Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Should you have a question about the office, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll help.
Don’t overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Spread heavy books and files evenly.
How we price fitted home offices
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The overall size of the piece
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.
What to send when you get in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
FAQs: fitted home offices in Shirley
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Shirley?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Shirley?
Yes. Shirley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Which materials go into your home offices?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Can you add power points to the desk?
We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. It is useful to agree the positions during the design visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
